Amazing Race is back!!

January 19th, 2007 by James

With all of the shows coming back from the Christmas Break, it is very hard to keep up with them all. One of our very favorites is the Amazing Race. It is Season 11, if you can believe it, and we did not start watching until Season 3, but we have been hooked ever since. This season is the All-Stars, and they have picked a lot of the good teams.

We were glad to see that they did not stoop low and pick some the teams that were very abusive to each other. It starts February 18th at 8pm, and it looks like this has the makings for a great race!

MySpace to offer spyware for parents

January 18th, 2007 by James
MySpace Logo Now, this is one of the best things to come from MySpace that I have seen in a long time. There was a time that MySpace was in the news every week or so. Keeping younger children safe on sites like this is very important.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Parents who install the monitoring software on their home computers would be able to find out what name, age and location their children are using to represent themselves on MySpace. The software doesn’t enable parents to read their child’s e-mail or see the child’s profile page and children would be alerted that their information was being shared. The program would continue to send updates about changes in the child’s name, age and location, even when the child logs on from other computers.

MySpace to offer spyware for parents

I would like to also add that if you have someone that visits this site regularly, I would recommend keeping your anti-spyware software up to date. There have many articles to the fact that MySpace is a contributor to the spread of spyware and malware.

Our first snow of the winter 2007

January 18th, 2007 by James

The kids woke up the to first snow of the winter. Jamie had never seen the snow before, so this was really his first. He played a little, but did not really seem to understand what is was. Mommy had to go into work today because she works with a lot of people who seem to think that snow or bad weather should stop you from going to work. What a shame.

‘Doomsday Clock’ moved forward – CNN.com

‘Doomsday Clock’ moved forward – CNN.com

The world has nudged closer to a nuclear apocalypse and environmental disaster, a trans-Atlantic group of prominent scientists warned Wednesday, pushing the hand of its symbolic Doomsday Clock two minutes closer to midnight.

It was the fourth time since the end of the Cold War that the clock has ticked forward, this time from 11:53 to 11:55, amid fears over what the scientists are describing as “a second nuclear age” prompted largely by atomic standoffs with Iran and North Korea.

20 ways you waste money on your car – MSN Money

January 17th, 2007 by James

I ran across this article and thought it was a good read. Most people can get carried away with car maintenance, where others drive it until the wheels fall off. I think that one to read and research is the oil change schedule. The only rule I ever really saw was the Jiffy Lube commercials and you know what they want you to do!

Test post using Windows Live Writer

January 16th, 2007 by James

This is my first post using Windows Live Writer. It was originally designed to work with MSN Live Spaces, but was then made to work with almost all blogging software. Using this software, we are able to create and publish posts without actually opening the web browser and logging into our software. It has spell check and much better insert qualities like maps and pictures.

First class at Williams-Sonoma

January 15th, 2007 by James

James went to a free class that Williams-Sonoma was offering. This class was on Espresso. It was a very basic overview of Espresso with handouts. There were about 15 people or more in the class, which was a few more than I thought would be there. I was glad to see a good turn out, so they will keep doing the classes.

They went through the different machines that they sell, electric and manual. The manual machine that they had was similar to the Bialetti Moka Express Stovetop Espresso Maker. They have a stove in the store, so they were able to show the stove top model in action. It was pretty early in the morning, and I usually drink tea then , so I did not try any of the coffee.

The model of Bialetti Gran Gala Cappuccino Maker that Williams-Sonoma sell is pretty expensive and looks different than the model that I linked to at Amazon. It is also twice as much as the model at Amazon as well. During the class they showed several other machines including the Jura-Capresso Impressa Z5. You can program this maker for different users and label it for that user. So, I could walk up to the machine, choose “James”, and it would know how I like my Espresso. That is what you get for $3200!

What I actually like about the class was to be able to ask questions to the instructors and then in turn to the class about how people did certain things like water and bean preparation. I learned that a lot of people just used water straight from the tap. I think that is what I was the most surprised about. Most of the water here around the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area has a pretty strong chlorine smell, especially in the ice. I have had to put a water filter on the ice maker supply because it would ruin a drink as it melted. Obviously, they had not watch Alton Brown’s Good Eats show on making coffee. I have a simple, yet beautiful, Pur CR900 9-Cup Pitcher, we just keep it full of water in the refrigerator.

Next week, they are having a class on Knife Skills. I think that this will be a good class also, and will try to have a review up next after the class.
